Welcome to the Website for the Regional Municipality of Waterloo.

In 1973, the Region of Waterloo was created as a new form of municipal government for the people living in the area then known as Waterloo County. Since then, great changes have occurred, especially in the last two years when the Region has taken on many new responsibilities for serving you. In fact, the Region now provides the majority of municipal services to our community.

Regional Council has also changed. Since 2000, the Regional Chair and Regional Councillors are now elected directly by you to serve you. They are joined by each of the area mayors who also sit as Regional Councillors.

People have often said they find local government confusing - who does what and to whom should they speak when they have a problem or to get information. We hope this website will assist you in understanding the important role the Region plays in each of your lives. Please browse through these pages and feel free to contact any members of Regional Council if you have questions or concerns.
