Energy
As one of the largest employers in Waterloo region with over 5.3 million square feet of space and responsibility for treating and pumping water and wastewater, the Region consumes nearly 130,000 megawatts of electricity and eight million cubic metres of natural gas in delivering a wide variety of services to the residents of the region. This includes the operation of administrative buildings as well as clinics, childcare centres, regional housing, retirement facilities, recycling and waste disposal, water and wastewater pumping and treatment facilities, traffic signals, and streetlights on regional roads.

Establish Office
Over the past fifteen years, Facilities Management staff have worked closely with all Regional departments to identify proven energy-saving opportunities, facilitate any rebate or grant funding processes, and implement retrofit projects as well as validate energy savings. Recently, Regional Council endorsed the establishment of a Corporate Energy Conservation Office within the Facilities Management division funded largely from annual energy savings achieved over the last few years. This will enable the Region to more aggressively reduce its energy use and thereby its impact on the environment.

Reduce Peak Demand
The primary function of the Energy Conservation Office is to reduce peak demand and total energy consumption (see Figure 1) while ensuring a reliable and high standard of service in support of these areas.

Energy Strategy
The Region of Waterloo is in the process of establishing an Energy Management Strategy with targets which will guide the Region as it moves forward towards a future in which we use considerably less energy and non-renewable resources, thereby reducing our impact on the environment and preserving resources for future generations.
