Growing Seedlings Indoors Workshop
9 a.m. to noon
Back by popular demand, in this workshop you will learn about seed germination, seed storage, soil, watering, lighting and tricks for keeping seedlings healthy and compact. Participants will plant and take home a tray of heritage seeds/seedlings for their own garden and in the fall they can bring them back to enter their best in Doon Heritage Village’s Fall Fair. Adventures in Time Summer Day Camp Registration

Children and youth help do farm and household chores, assist a tradesman with his work as an apprentice, play 1914 games, go fishing by the covered bridge and attend a picnic on the village green. Registration is taken in person only, with full payment, on a first come, first serve basis. Space is limited. MasterCard, Visa, Interac, cash and cheques accepted. No cancellations or refunds. Registration takes place in the Curatorial Centre.

Easter Sunrise Service

A glorious Easter morning cascades through the windows of the historic Freeport United Brethren Church at Doon Heritage Village as the 46th annual Easter Sunrise Service begins. The service is sponsored by the Cambridge Christian Business Men’s Committee. Light refreshments will be served following the service. A voluntary offering will be collected.

Friends of Doon Heritage Village Annual General Meeting

Established in 1956 as the Ontario Pioneer Community Foundation, the Friends of Doon Heritage Village host their 54th Annual General Meeting, reviewing their activities in 2009 and plans for 2010 in support of the new Waterloo Region Museum and Doon Heritage Village. The Friends of Doon Heritage Village represent the more than 1,000 volunteers who annually contribute their enthusiasm, time and expertise to all aspects of the museum’s operation. Guest speaker Sean Jasmins, Supervisor of Marketing and Communication, will talk about museum marketing and branding. Everyone is welcome.

Pruning Trees and Shrubs Workshop

Learn the principles and methods of basic tree and shrub pruning in this hands-on workshop. Under the instruction of Bob Wildfong, Doon Heritage Village’s Heritage Gardener, you will prune young trees, shrubs and vines. Learn how to shape and train woody plants, repair damaged branches, revitalize thin growth, and stimulate foliage, flower and fruit development. Admission is $10 per person plus applicable taxes. Preparing to Garden Workshop
9 a.m. to noon
The novice gardener will learn all there is to know about starting a garden. This workshop will provide a hands-on overview of soil preparation, essential tools, methods of watering, fertilizing and preventing weeds. Participants will sow early seeds and learn how to care for tender seedlings during the last weeks of cold spring weather. Transplanting and arranging perennial flowers is a highlight of the workshop. Participants will take home a selection of potted perennials to transplant into their own gardens. 17th Annual Emergency Services Muster, Games and Parade
10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The same date, same great event. Let the bells clang and the sirens wail as Doon Heritage Village in conjunction with the Waterloo Regional Police, Ontario Provincial Police, Fire Departments in Waterloo Region and the Waterloo Region EMS hosts the 17th Annual Emergency Services Muster, Games and Parade. Visitors and enthusiasts can enjoy a fired-up day that will feature antique and modern fire trucks, police cars and ambulances, fire safety demonstrations, fire game competitions between fire fighters, and a parade of historical equipment. A great event for families and individuals of all ages! Admission is by cash donation. All proceeds will be donated to emergency services related programs.

Children’s Groundwater Festival

The Waterloo Region Museum is pleased to host the 15th Waterloo Wellington Children's Groundwater Festival. This fun and creative week-long event features a variety of interactive activities, demonstrations and displays, which challenge people of all ages to consider the source of and importance of water to themselves, the environment and society. Ecofest
The 3rd annual Ecofest has found a new and permanent home.] Ecofest is a two-day fun and interactive Regional event aimed at educating the public about environmentally friendly lifestyle choices. The event will showcase local Eco Schools, municipal and community group initiatives, products and services related to air and water quality, healthy lifestyle choices, energy efficiency, waste reduction, locally grown food, and sustainable transportation. In collaboration with many local partners, this event is especially designed for families, children and schools. Admission is free.

Seniors’ Day

The Waterloo Region Museum is throwing a party for seniors! Anyone who is 55 years of age and older is invited to come to Doon Heritage Village on this day to help us celebrate a day especially for seniors. Visit the new Waterloo Region Museum building, hear all about what is planned for the Museum’s exhibit galleries, watch a silent movie, and take a nostalgic trip down memory lane with a visit to the turn of the century village. Enjoy some delicious strawberry short cake, garden tours, musical entertainment and a sing-a-long in the Church. Admission is free for those 55 years of age and older.

Antique and Classic Car ‘Show and Tell’ - The First 60 Years of the Automobile

A classic car show with a twist! The show will feature pre-1960 antique and classic cars on display throughout Doon Heritage Village. The tell part is the new twist. Authors John Dunbar and Glenn Baechler will highlight the role that vehicle types played in automotive history by presenting spectacular examples that exemplify each phase of the development of the automobile. No fee for exhibitors or classic car owners to register for the event, though pre-registration is required. Dominion Day Picnic on Canada Day

It is Canada’s birthday – 143 years young. Come to a good old-fashioned 1914 birthday party and have some fun! Enjoy musical entertainment, and a game of croquet or horseshoes. Bring a picnic lunch or enjoy food that will be available for purchase. Admission is free.

The History and Traditions of Gardens in Waterloo County

Doon Heritage Village’s horticulturist, Bob Wildfong, will give a presentation on the history and traditions of gardens and gardening in Waterloo County. KidSummer gives you the chance to spend an unforgettable summer with the kids in your life when you come to Waterloo Region Museum to kick off our second month of A Day In The Life … 1914. Activities may include egg collecting from the chicken coop, helping the blacksmith twist iron, or sending a telegraph. KidSummer by Today’s Parent magazine features a different free activity every day in July and August at locations around southwestern Ontario. Seed Saving Workshop
Learn the art and science of seed saving at Doon Heritage Village under the guidance of Bob Wildfong, the museum’s Heritage Gardener, an accomplished seed producer and one of Canada’s experts on heritage seeds and plants. Participants will learn how to collect seeds from garden plants, and clean and store them for planting the following spring. Methods for controlling pollination and proper seed harvesting will be demonstrated. Participants will be invited to gather some seeds from the museum’s heritage gardens. Doon Heritage Village is inviting all homeschoolers to a program especially designed for them. Spend a day doing a variety of seasonal fun activities and watching demonstrations while meeting curriculum requirements. Cost is $4 per child. All teaching parents are free, children under five are free.

In 1914 the Fall Fair was a showcase for the best of the best - whether it was a prize cow or a noisy steam engine, a cherry pie, a pumpkin or a favourite quilt. The community is invited to rekindle the spirit of an old-fashioned fair at Doon Heritage Village. Enter your best baking, handiwork or preserves in competition for cash prizes. Piecing Together Canada's History Through Quilts with Pauline Grondin

“No thread running through our history is stronger and more consistent than their use as links between women and their female descendants...many women felt that the female family...past, present and future...was important, and that these generations were united by the quilts that were the work of their hands and their hearts.” Storyteller Pauline Grondin will spend an evening showcasing handmade quilt designs from the past and sharing stories, traditions, superstitions, songs, music, poetry and prose that honour the quilt designs from long ago. Blood & Fire: The Donnelly Project with storyteller Susan Charters and singer-songwriter Paul Court

In the second evening of the Friends of Doon Heritage Village’s storytelling series, Susan Charters and Paul Court give a presentation that is a fine blend of song and story about the incidents surrounding the brutal events of February 1880 in that small Ontario Township of Lucan. The performance will draw you into the story, let you hear the voices that are willing to speak, revealing or hiding what they wish, and letting you form you own opinion, as so many have, about the Black Donnellys.

Learn the techniques of traditional bread making in one of Doon Heritage Village’s historical kitchens and then step it up a notch with a Christmas theme.
