STAGE 2 WATER USE RESTRICTIONS

Due to reduced water pumping capacity, the Region of Waterloo's Commissioner of Transportation and Environmental Services announced a Stage 2 Water Supply Emergency will be in effect from May 31 to September 30, 2007.

Residents, businesses and institutions are permitted to water lawns one day per week, according to the number of their street address (see chart below to determine your watering day). All lawn watering on your day must take place between the hours of 5:30-10:00 a.m. and 7:00-11:00 p.m. (Time restrictions under this rule are the same for all municipalities.) Since weekends are already peak water use times, no one will be permitted to water lawns on Saturday or Sunday.

Outdoor Water Use at this level is restricted as follows:

LawnsThe once-per-week lawn watering rule with time restrictions as detailed above.
Newly planted sod/seedWater within 24 hours of planting or treatment, then during the 5:30-10 a.m and 7-11 p.m. watering hours for 6 consecutive days afterwards. For days 8 through 14, residents may water on alternate days where odd-numbered addresses water on odd dates of the month and even-numbered addresses water on even dates. After that period, residents must adhere to the once-per-week schedule.
Treated lawnsWater within 24 hours
Trees, shrubs, flowers, gardensPermitted on alternate days with odd-numbered addresses allowed on odd-numbered days of the month and even-numbered addresses on even-numbered days of the month, between 5:30 and 10 a.m. and 7 and 11 p.m.
Residential vehicle washingPermitted on alternate days with odd-numbered addresses allowed on odd-numbered days of the month and even-numbered addresses on even-numbered days of the month, between 5:30 and 10 a.m. and 7 and 11 p.m.
Pool top-upsPermitted on alternate days with odd-numbered addresses allowed on odd-numbered days of the month and even-numbered addresses on even-numbered days of the month, between 5:30 and 10 a.m. and 7 and 11 p.m.
Washing streets, driveways, walkways, buildings, etc.Completely restricted.

Watering with a watering can is permitted on any day.

Regional By-law Enforcement officers will be enforcing the rules at this stage and issuing fines for non-compliance.

Stage 2 offences include:
  • Watering lawn, newly planted sod/seed or treated lawn during improper day/time
  • Watering trees, shrubs, flowers/gardens with hose or irrigation system during improper day/time
  • Washing vehicle during improper day/time
  • Permitting water to pool or run off lawn or garden
  • Washing street, driveway, walkway or building with hose or irrigation system
  • Wasting water
