Let it Rain Rain barrels and rain water harvestingDesign element only following page title - no link  print friendly icon

Rain barrels provide a simple way to collect water for outdoor water use. Harvesting rain water is one way of reducing the amount of water run-off into storm sewers and creeks, and is a good way of getting water back into the ground, putting it to good use, and saving money. And untreated rain water is great for your indoor plants, your garden and lawn, or washing your car.

Did You Know?
Since 2001, over 12,000 rain barrels have been distributed through the Region of Waterloo's rain barrel program!

Many rainbarrels available today are designed from recycled plastic. Look for a rainbarrel with the following features:
  • Childproof safety lid
  • Debris/bug screen
  • Overflow valve and tube
  • Hose attachments plus a hose clip
Click here for more information about the Region of Waterloo's rain barrel distribution program.

Tips:

  • Use rain water harvested with a rain barrel to water gardens. This untreated water is great for your indoor plants and lawn as well!
  • Contour your garden so that rain water flows automatically from downspouts to thirsty plants.
  • Rain water from your rain barrel is great for washing the car!
