- Bridgeport Bridge Update
An update on Bridgeport Bridge was given by Lucille Bish and Wendy Wright Cascaden. Both expressed their confidence in concrete expert Paul Jeffs, who has impressive credentials and experience with heritage structures. His website can be viewed at www.pjmc.net. The bridge project team is implementing all of the requests made by HPAC.
INITIATIVES
a) Regional Official Plan (ROP) Second Draft, May 12 Public Meeting
The presentation by Ron Hackett at the May 12, 2009 public meeting was well received by Council.
b) Regionally Significant Heritage Resources proposed information sheet.
Anne Fitzpatrick provided an overview of the public building research project. It was determined that some of the “more interesting” recent public buildings, such as the Waterloo County Courthouse, should be included in the list. In addition to this, mausoleums such as those in the Woodland Cemetery, should also be included.
c) Heritage Preservation Weekend
Kathryn McGarry is checking with Heritage Cambridge to see if they are willing to be a partner for the Heritage Preservation Weekend. Al Junker will propose a Saturday in November and will contact the Heritage Planners in Kitchener and Cambridge and at both ACO branches.
d) Other Initiatives
Al Junker suggested a potential speaker for the Enabling Heritage Development Workshops whose name he will provide to HPAC.
INFORMATION UPDATES
a) Main Street Bridge Plaque
The plaque for the bridge will be further refined in July. Jean Haalboom will meet with Patricia Wagner to go over the wording and photo selection for the plaque.
- Ontario Heritage Trust 2009 Recognition Programs
A description of the award criteria was given by Lucille Bish. No names were immediately put forward for consideration. The nomination for the award is due by July 17, 2009.
c) Presentation to Cambridge Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee, May 21, 2009
The Cambridge Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee is interested in a joint meeting with other Heritage Advisory Committees. The members of HPAC agreed that a joint meeting would be beneficial, particularly to discuss Cultural Heritage Landscape policy.
d) Green Energy Act, 2009
Wendy Wright Cascaden and Jody Decker agreed to review the Regulations to the Act and to provide comments by July 24, 2009.
e) Ontario Heritage Conference 2009, Conference Highlights
The highlights of the conference were provided by Anne Fitzpatrick. She will circulate her summary of the conference.
f) APT Article “Sustainable Heritage: Challenges and Strategies for the Twenty First Century”
Jean Haalboom will share the energy and heritage home articles with REEP.
g) Tour of Wellesley Village. RE: Heritage Conservation District potential
Ron Hackett outlined possible boundaries for a Heritage Conservation District in Wellesley Village and noted that many of the original buildings from the earliest settlement still exist. The Wellesley Committee has a list of buildings that have potential for designation.
There were several suggestions made by the Committee regarding the potential Heritage Conservation District in Wellesley Village. Suggestions included creating awareness of the potential HCD by providing clear background information and a map that shows the existing historic buildings. It was also recommended that the Wellesley Committee contact the Ministry of Culture in order to learn more about HCD process. Another suggestion was to be as inclusive as possible at the beginning of the HCD process and not be overly concerned with defining the boundaries of the district. The final note was that it is important to consider funding because the studies require professional expertise.
OTHER BUSINESS
a) Jean Haalboom thanked Ron Hackett for his two presentations to Council regarding the Regional Official Plan and the proposed rapid transit. Ron Hackett was also congratulated for receiving the Award of Excellence from the Region of Waterloo Heritage Foundation.
b) At the rapid transit meetings, members of Waterloo’s MHAC expressed their concern about the impact that the stations could have on streetscapes and buildings. HPAC’s initiative of mapping stable neighbourhoods is important. HPAC needs to ensure that the rapid transit team has this information for design alignment of the rapid transit route.
