DELEGATIONS
Kayla Jonas and Paul Dubniak from the Heritage Resources Centre at the University of Waterloo gave an update on the Heritage Conservation District Study and the Historic Place Initiative. They also provided the Region with a copy of the completed study: Heritage Districts Work! Heritage Conservation District Study Summary Report 2009.

BUSINESS ARISING
Anne Fitzpatrick confirmed that the HPAC comments on the proposed regulations for the Green Energy and Green Economy Act, 2009 were submitted.
INITIATIVES
a) Regionally Significant Heritage Resources—Public Building Inventory
Members of HPAC volunteered to help verify and expand the existing inventory of public buildings. Anne Fitzpatrick will send out the rough draft of the inventory to those HPAC members who volunteered and will remind members of the criteria for the inventory.

b) Heritage Preservation Workshop
Al Junker and Anne Fitzpatrick provided details about the proposed workshop for November 14, 2009 at the University of Waterloo, School of Architecture in Cambridge. There was discussion about the price and whether individuals from the same household should receive a discount. There was concern whether there was enough time to sufficiently advertise the conference and suggestions were made for different advertising possibilities.
c) Heritage Bridge Recognition. Update on the Main Street Bridge
The draft plaque has been reviewed by Anne Fitzpatrick, Lucille Bish, Pat Wagner, Jean Haalboom, Gary MacDonald, Valerie Spring and Jim Quantrell. It is nearly ready to be sent to Design. A final draft will be produced for review and any small changes. The plaque should be ready in November. Melissa MacLean volunteered to begin gathering research for Bridgeport Bridge, which is the next interpretive plaque to be completed.
Scenic Roads—Classification and Work Plan, Regional Road Corridor Design.
Karen Hammond volunteered to help work on this project. Anne Fitzpatrick will gather more information and details about what this project will require.
Collaboration with Post-secondary Schools
Anne Fitzpatrick confirmed that Dr. Luna Khirfan, Professor of Urban Design at the University of Waterloo will be undertaking a design project with her 300 level students that incorporates heritage conservation and urban intensification. The project will focus on the Civic Centre Heritage Conservation District and Victoria Street North. The project based course will run for the entire winter term (Jan-Apr '09). The information required for the project has been provided by the Region and the City of Kitchener. Members of HPAC may be asked to participate in the design charette for the final project.
Jody Decker gave an overview of the class she is teaching at Wilfred Laurier University that will focus on Cultural Heritage Landscapes. She requested the assistance of members of HPAC with certain aspects of the course. Wellesley will be the case study for the class and Ron Hackett will be assisting with this portion of the course.
INFORMATION UPDATES
Heritage Canada Foundation’s Spero-L
An interest was expressed in attempting to connect the older churches in the Region with the Heritage Canada Spero-L resource. This resource is a free email-based discussion tool about places of faith at risk in Canada. Melissa MacLean volunteered to look into this.
Doors Open Event- Saturday September 19
Volunteers are needed for the Governor’s House and Gaol to help set-up and take down the table.
Regional Official Plan Update
The Regional Official Plan was adopted by Council on June 16, 2009. Comments were received from the Cambridge Municipal Advisory Committee.
OTHER BUSINESS
a) St. George Street Water Tower
The demolition of the tower has been post-postponed and communication with the community will be taking place. There is no interest from the City of Kitchener in designating the structure. There is an extremely high cost for rehabilitating the structure.
b) Port Dalhousie Heritage Conservation District
HPAC expressed interest in learning more about the Ontario Municipal Board’s decision at Port Dalhousie and how it might impact other Heritage Conservation Districts. Natalie Hardacre provided some background information and more details on the decision will be provided to HPAC.
