Washing machines are the second largest user of water in your home. Traditional top-load washers have an upright tub, and to get the job done, the clothes must be completely immersed in water. Some top loading machines are designed with water efficiency in mind, allowing you to adjust the water level to the amount of clothes washed, or re-using grey wash water for a second load (suds-saver).
Did You Know?
Water-efficient washing machines use 50-120 litres per load, in comparison to traditional top loading machines which use 132-240 litres per load? That’s nearly a 40 percent savings in water! |
In a front-load washing machine, clothes are tumbled through a pool of water, and there is no agitator. They tend to handle a larger load, with less water! Front-load washers also tend to use less soap, and are gentler on clothes.
Tips:
- When doing laundry, use the load selector to match the water level to the size of the load you’re doing.
- Use cold water as often as possible to save energy and conserve hot water (also better for clothes made with today’s synthetic fabrics!)
- Consider making the switch to a water-efficient front-load washing machine, to save on water, energy, and detergent.
