INITIATIVES

a) HPAC 2009 Priority Setting

The committee discussed the initiatives they would like to undertake during 2009 including both new and continued projects. The list of priorities for 2009 will be recorded with contacts and timelines as the Current Initiatives table which is part of the committee’s monthly agenda.

The following areas of interest were highlighted:
further exploration of rural villages as Cultural Heritage Landscapes and the role of area municipalities in identifying and documenting these heritage resources;
proactively identifying areas that are ideal for and/or inappropriate for intensification in core urban areas;
potential roles for HPAC in the conservation of pioneer cemeteries (discussion will continue at the February meeting);
co-hosting a ‘hands-on’ seminar on heritage preservation in partnership with local ACOs and Municipal Heritage Advisory Committees;
refocusing the Ontario Building Code workshop to include municipal staff and the development community in a discussion on ‘Enabling Heritage Development’;
collaboration with post secondary schools and professional institutions; and
providing local heritage educational resources to schools based on what heritage resources are located in their neighbourhood.


b) HPAC Comments on Draft Regional Official Plan

Kathryn McGarry volunteered to attend the public meeting of Regional Council being held on January 27 and 28 as a delegation in support of the strong cultural heritage policies included in the draft Regional Official Plan. Official comments from the committee will also be submitted to the Regional Official Plan team through the Commissioner of Planning, Housing and Community Services.


c) Regionally Significant Heritage Resources

Discussion on the research plan for Regionally Significant Heritage Resources was deferred to the February meeting.


INFORMATION UPDATES

a) HPAC Display for Heritage Day and Heritage Showcase

The Heritage Canada Foundation theme for Heritage Day 2009 is “Heritage and the Environment: Saving Places Built to Last”. Pat Wagner, Councillor Haalboom and Joanna Rickert-Hall have volunteered to make suggestions in early February on a display design that will compliment the theme. Volunteers to staff the display will be organized at the February meeting.


OTHER BUSINESS

a) HPAC Annual Accomplishments & Priorities Report

A draft report was circulated for comments. The report will be presented to the Community Services Committee on Tuesday February 17, 2009. Jody Decker volunteered to present the report.

b) Trussler Road Reconstruction

The Trussler Road Reconstruction Project is hosting a Public Information Session on Tuesday January 27, 2009 from 5-8 p.m. at the Mannheim Community Centre. The Corridor Management Plan developed by the committee is being implemented as part of the reconstruction project. Committee members were invited to drop in to learn the details of the planned reconstruction.

Federal Budget

A Pre-Budget Consultation Brief was forwarded to local Members of Parliament and the Minister of Finance in support of including financial incentives for heritage restoration in the upcoming Federal budget.


Upcoming Events

Committee members were reminded of several upcoming heritage events including the Architectural Conservancy Society ‘Intensification and Heritage’ panel discussion, the University of Waterloo presentation on using photos to value landscapes, the Grand Strategy Heritage Day Workshop and the Waterloo Regional Heritage Foundation Heritage Showcase.
