Applying for smart about salt designation:
The Region of Waterloo is currently accepting applications for smart about salt designations from businesses that operation within Waterloo Region only. In 2010, the new smart about salt corporation will take over management of the program and will begin accepting designations from across Ontario.

The smart about salt program is an intiative of the Region of Waterloo, the Buidling Owners and Managers of Ottawa and Landscape Ontario.

Sometimes less really is more

Remember the days when we equated bigger with better? There was a time when the biggest cars, biggest computers, and biggest bell-bottoms all left their smaller-sized counterparts in the dust. Well, thankfully, we’re evolving and learning that sometimes less is really more.

The smart about salt initiative is one of the first comprehensive winter salt management programs in Canada. It ensures both winter safety and the protection of our drinking water. Without question, salt can be used more efficiently and effectively – with your help.

Be part of the solution
We can have the greatest impact on our future if we work in partnership. We each have a role to play – as residents, organizations, snow removal contractors and municipal government.

Our commitment
Of course, the Region of Waterloo has an important role to play in reducing our own use of salt on roads. Here are five key initiatives we’ve put in place to make that happen:
  1. We’re working with the local cities and townships to find new, innovative solutions to reducing the volume of salt used.
  2. Our new ‘Winter Maintenance Policy and Procedures’ sets out guidelines to reduce salt use by 25 per cent.
  3. We’ve equipped many of our trucks with liquid salt to pre-wet rock salt and help it stick to the road.
  4. All Region of Waterloo trucks are equipped with tracking devices
  5. We continue to explore advanced salt application methods and alternative products.
