Rob Horne Appointed Commissioner, Planning, Housing and Community Services
Waterloo Region – Rob Horne, who is currently the Region’s Director of Housing, has been appointed the new Commissioner of Planning, Housing and Community Services for the Region of Waterloo.
”I am pleased that we were able to fill this position from within our own organization,” said Mike Murray, Chief Administrative Officer. “Under Rob’s leadership as Director of Housing, the Region of Waterloo has distinguished itself as a national leader in the creation of new affordable housing. Rob has played a key role in a number of significant initiatives, and has guided the Division through a very challenging period.”
Mr. Horne assumed the duties of Director, Housing in 2002. Prior to that, he served as the Director of Policy Planning for the City of Cambridge. He is actively involved in a number of industry associations and not-for-profit organizations.
“I am excited to have been chosen to lead the Planning, Housing and Community Services Division. In this new role, I look forward to working with Regional Council, Regional staff and our many local, provincial and federal partners to address the challenges and opportunities ahead.”
With almost 20 years of municipal government experience, as well as experience at the federal and provincial levels and in the private sector, Rob brings a wide range of experience to the position.
He has participated in initiatives at the national, provincial and local level which have included involvement with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, the Urban Development Institute, Ontario Non-Profit Housing Association, Co-operative Housing Federation, and the local home building industry.
The Planning, Housing and Community Services Department is responsible for the implementation of the Region’s innovative Growth Management Strategy, and a number of functions related to community planning, transportation planning, housing, mapping and planning information, township library services and the heritage and cultural programs of two museum complexes.
Mr. Horne has lived and worked in Waterloo Region for more than 20 years.
