Description :
Pre-printed family register (Familien Register) from Hallman Bible (997.023.001.001). The entries are for the marriage of Johannes S. Hallman and Maria S. Clemens, their birth dates, and the births of their children. The entries from 1829 to 1852 are done by Isaac Z. Hunsicker (1803-1870), and Wilhelm Gerhard (1864-1913) has done the entries from 1869 to 1879. The text is as follows: "Johannes S, Hallman, Geboren, June den 8 ten, 1829/ Maria S. Clemens, Geboren, September den 11 ten, 1834/ Eva C. Hallman Geboren, Januar den 17 ten, 1854/ Jacob C. Hallman, Geboren June den 20 ten, 1856/ Abram C. Bindemann/ I. Z. H". John and Maria Hallman lived about two and a half miles north of New Dundee on his father's (Rev. Jacob Hallman (1803-1878)) old homestead until they moved to Berlin. Shortly after moving, John died on December 10, 1893. Wilhelm Gerhard (1864-1913), was an itinerant Fraktur artist. He was a native of Berlin, but traveled widely to exercise his artistic skills. He made a large number of family records in the areas ranging from Markham Township in the east, Huron County in the west, Bruce County in the north, and Haldimand County in the south. Characteristics of his work are: general design and manner of printing are identical, large family registers are normally decorated with a similar motif, a heart superimposed upon an anchor, on large family records and numerous smaller birth records, there is an inclusion of small birds and butterflies over the printed text. Several, but not all pieces are signed by the artist. Most of his work was done in the 1880's and 1890's. The Fraktur artist Isaac Ziegler Hunsicker (1803-1870) was born in Montgomery County. His great, great grandfather arrived in Pennsylvania in 1717. Examples of his artwork have been found in Pennsylvania and in Ontario. According to Hunsicker history, Isaac and his brother Michael (1796-1871) stopped briefly in Ohio before moving on to Ontario in the 1830's. It is believed he came to Upper Canada during the period of 1832-1835. It is not sure if he was a school teacher in Pennsylvania, but he was involved in the educational activities of early Waterloo County (he's listed among the first school teachers at the Eby School in Berlin beginning in 1837). Characteristics of his Fraktur include a predilection for scripture text with decorative embellishments, common sense proverbs and didactic statement following religious script, and geographical references to cities, and provinces. Several pieces feature a stylized face in upper corners, and a precise execution of a decorative border composed usually of an 'S' motif. His career as a Fraktur artist extended from approximately 1830 to 1870.
