Recent upgrades help Region of Waterloo Airport take flight
Waterloo Region – An agreement between the Region of Waterloo and an Alberta-based airline will see scheduled air service at the Region of Waterloo Airport take off in March.
Thanks to recent airport upgrades – including construction of a new terminal building, an extended runway and expanded apron – the Region was able to sign a deal with Quikair Inc. for scheduled air service to Ottawa beginning March 29, 2004 and Montreal approximately one month later. Regional Council ratified the agreement tonight.
"Regional Council has long been aware of the need for scheduled air service from our own airport. Quikair's decision to operate out of the Region of Waterloo Airport confirms that this market exists and the construction of a new terminal building was a necessary part of bringing scheduled service to the Region,” said Regional Chair Ken Seiling. “We are confident that air service to Ottawa and Montreal will be the start of additional services which will better serve the people of Waterloo Region.”
With hassle-free air service directly to and from the Region of Waterloo Airport, passengers will be able to bypass the distant and congested hubs at Toronto Pearson and Hamilton airports. Quikair’s fast and convenient service will cater to local business travelers who require frequent and flexible flight access as well as recreational passengers.
The Region of Waterloo Airport is a full service facility, renowned for its commitment to aviation excellence. Situated in the heart of a dynamic and rapidly growing economic region, it is the 13th busiest airport in Canada (according to NAV Canada Annual Movements Statistics, 2002). There is an estimated travel market of 1.4 million incoming and outgoing passengers in Waterloo Region within its immediate catchment area.
“QuikAir is proud to be a partner with the Region in establishing a quality air service agreement for the Region of Waterloo Airport,” said Paul Phee, President of Quikair Inc.
Quikair Inc. is a regional airline based in Edmonton, Alberta. The privately owned company currently operates in the Calgary-Edmonton corridor, where they carried more than 60,000 passengers last year. The company has developed a reputable business providing frequent, reliable and high quality air service to business travelers.
Quikair will initially operate two round-trip flights daily (Monday – Friday) to both Ottawa and Montreal, however, additional flights may be added according to demand. For more information on Quikair or to make reservations, visit www.quikair.ca or call 1-800-551-7845.
