The staff of the Joseph Schneider Haus have been delivering educational excellence for twenty-five years. Our distinctive curriculum based programs and innovative short-term educational experiences have enthused and enlightened students and teachers alike since the Museum opened in 1981.
Core Programs emphasize hands-on learning opportunities in the Historic Haus and outbuildings or in the recreated historic garden.
Short-term Programs run concurrently with our Core Programs by making use of the Joseph Schneider Haus galleries and classroom. These programs are designed to complement special events and festivals taking place within the Waterloo Region as well as changing exhibits on display in our galleries.
Short-Term Programs
Form Meets Function in Traditional Basketry
Opening in June, this fascinating exhibition forms an excellent counterpart to Wendy's new age baskets. Highlighting the utilitarian baskets of the indigenous peoples, the Pennsylvania Germans and other cultures that made Ontario their home, this show will also examine the properties of natural materials they used such as willow, ash, oak and rye.
Drawing from the rich resources of these two exhibits, Joseph Schneider Haus will offer a special two hour programme for grades 3/4 classes from September through mid November. A Tisket a Tasket......features a basket-making activity and compliments mathematics, visual arts, language and social studies curricula. Spaces are limited so please book early.
Christmas at Schneider Haus
The Schneiders and their Mennonite neighbours did not celebrate Christmas nor did they decorate trees or hang up stockings. So visitors look forward each year to the festive gallery exhibits the Museum presents that tell the stories of the countless traditions we observe today. School classes are invited to participate in a special seasonal education programme with plenty of fun and hands-on learning for Primary Grades. Teachers! Book early for this popular 1 1/2 hour programme. Offered December 1 to December 17, 2010)
