TAXI-CABS
The Licensing and Regulatory Services Section of the Region of Waterloo is responsible for licensing and regulating the taxi industry. Licensed taxi-cabs are required to display a Taxi-cab Vehicle Licence in the windshield of their vehicle.

Taxi-cab Inspections
Each licensed taxi-cab is inspected a mininum of 3 times a year and the meter is inspected annually for accuracy. Taxi-cabs are required to be clean, in good repair and mechanically safe. Once a taxi-cab meter has been tested and determined to be operating accurately, the meter is sealed to prevent tampering.
Taxi-cab Drivers
All drivers providing a taxi-cab service within the Region of Waterloo are required to be licensed. As part of the licensing process both a police and a driving record check is carried out. Licensed taxi-cab drivers are required to post their licence in a visible place. The licence contains their picture, their first name and their taxi-cab licence number.
How do I apply for aTaxi-cab Driver Licence?
Part of the requirement to drive a taxi-cab is that you obtain sponsorship from an existing company. That means you need the president of a taxi company sign your application form. Application forms are available at each taxi company or our office. Details on the cost of the licence are noted on the application form.
How do I apply for a Taxi-cab Owner Licence?
In order for you to operate your own taxi-cab you must be a part of one of the existing taxi companies. Licences are issued on a 1:1650 ratio (that is one licence for every 1,650 people). Details on the requirements and the cost are listed on the application form. If interested in becoming a taxi-cab owner, please contact one of the existing taxi companies for further details.
